Being a scientist involves more than just doing experiments, analyzing problems or sitting in front of the computer, staring at data – it’s also about connecting with other scientists and communicating our work. At OceanVoices, we’re all about creating a space for young ocean researchers to share their experiences and scientific ideas and give them an opportunity to raise their voices.
But it’s not just about exchange within the scientific universe; we believe in networking on a broader level, connecting scientists with technicians, administrative staff and interested people from the public. Therefore, we took the chance last month to be part of the GEOMAR Science Day – an event to bring people together with the goal to connect and create space for new ideas and projects. This year’s Science Day is a new yearly tradition of exchange and cooperation at GEOMAR. With all the interesting talks, poster displays, hands-on activities, and behind-the-scenes tours presented in an understandable and entertaining way, it is truly an event for all. At our small stand, a poster informed the interested audience about our OceanVoices blog project and invited them to become active in several ways. In addition to the possibility of suggesting future topics, sections, and giving feedback, we have tried to win new authors.
And what is the best way to do this? Making them write something! The task was to draw a random picture from a box, find a suitable, entertaining or interesting title for the picture and indicate the story behind it with a few sentences. Even though some of the pictures were a bit strange, showing surreal situations or complex arrangements, we were amazed about the creativity and passion the people showed! In the end we had a huge collection of thoughts, ideas, visions and opinions that made clear to every viewer that really everyone has a creative side and is secretly a writer.
So now let’s take a look at our poster and browse through our selection of funny and creative stories. And if you feel like you want to test your creativity and contribute to our blog and talk about a topic of your choice, reach out to us – we’re happy to hear from you, because we love to read your story no matter if you are a student, doctoral researcher or early postdoc! Let your voice become an OceanVoice!
