Heute endlich ein großes Aufatmen – die Container mit unserer Expeditionsausrüstung für die Expedition TRANSDRIFT XXII sind an unserem Partnerinstitut in St. Petersburg angekommen und haben somit auch den russischen Zoll passiert. Unsere zwei 20-ft-Container wurden vorletzte Woche im GEOMAR mit Hilfe der TLZ-Mitarbeiter Mike und Florian beladen. Nachdem dann Ende der Woche der deutsche Zoll unsere wissenschaftlichen Geräte abgefertigt hatte, ging es am Donnerstagmorgen auf den Weg zum Hamburger Hafen, um dort mit dem Schiff nach St. Petersburg zu kommen.

Parallel zu dem Transport der Expeditionsausrüstung aus Deutschland reisten Heidi, Georgi und ich letzte Woche nach St. Petersburg zum Otto-Schmidt-Labor. Dort lagert unser aus vielen TRANSDRIFT-Expeditionen zusammengesammeltes Equipment. Um auf dem Schiff sofort mit dem Aufbau der Ausrüstung anzufangen, mussten diese Sachen allerdings geordnet, getestet und für den Transport nach Archangelsk verpackt werden. Bei 30-35°C war das ein ziemlich schweißtreibendes Vergnügen. Nach stundenlangem Kabel-Sortieren, Schrauben-Zählen, Kisten-Labeln und Listen-Schreiben war am Freitagabend alles bereit.

Die Ausrüstung aus St. Petersburg wird diese Woche in die aus Deutschland gelieferten Container geladen und nach Archangelsk transportiert. Auch unser Forschungsschiff RV Viktor Buynitzkiy macht sich diese Woche auf den Weg von St. Petersburg zum Hafen nach Archangelsk, wo die Expeditionscrew am 21. August eingeschifft wird.

Nun hoffen wir alle auf eine stabile politische Situation, um am 21. August auf das nächste Abendteuer in die Arktis aufzubrechen.

Today we received the confirmation that our two containers for the TRANSDRIFT XXII expedition passed the Russian custom and arrived safely at  St. Petersburg State University. This was a relief for all participants who worked hard for this to happen. Last week we loaded all equipment into the containers with Mike and Florian from the TLZ, who kindly helped us. After the German custom released our cargo, it was ready to depart from Kiel toward Hamburg harbor from where it was shipped to St. Petersburg.

While waiting for the arrival of the containers, Georgi, Heidi and I went to the Otto Schmidt Laboratory in St. Petersburg where a huge part of our  equipment of the past TRANSDRIFT expeditions was stored. To be able to start installing all equipment once we are onboard the ship, we needed to order and test all instruments in St. Petersburg. With temperatures of about 30-35°C, it was no real pleasure to work there, especially for an Arctic researcher. After hours of ordering cables, counting screws, and labeling boxes everything was done on Friday evening.

The equipment from St. Petersburg is going to be loaded into the containers that arrived from Germany, which will then be shipped to the port of Arkhangelsk (the starting point for the expedition). Our research vessel VIKTOR BUYNITSKIY will depart this week as well in order to soon reach the port of Arkhangelsk where it will wait for the scientific crew to arrive on 21 August.

Now we all hope for a calm political situation in order to start the next Arctic adventure.
