After months of preparation, we are finally on our way! 12 scientific crew including experienced researchers and students, and 12 permanent crew members on board of research vessel Alkor, on a cruise to the deep basins of the Baltic.

The objective: continue a long-term data series of oceanographic parameters, foodweb characteristics, and information on the Baltic big three commercial fish species, cod, herring and sprat.

Over the two weeks of our cruise, we will post information about life and work on board of a research vessel, report on scientific observations, and introduce you to some of the tools of the trade of marine biologists at sea.

As a starter, the first two photos were taken soon leaving the GEOMAR pier this morning – a goodbye to Kiel Fjord, and the obligatory safety instruction that takes place at the start of each cruise.

Greetings from Kiel Bight,

The scientific crew of AL454
