About

As one of the most remote and least explored ocean regions on our planet, the Equatorial Pacific Ocean is at the focus of an expedition starting today in the framework of the international GEOTRACES programme. On their way across the Pacific, an international team of researchers led by Professor Dr. Eric Achterberg, marine biogeochemist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, studies how limitations in nitrogen and the trace element iron reduce phytoplankton growth. Reduced phytoplankton growth is thought to cause a release of carbon dioxide in this ocean region instead of the widespread observed uptake. The cruise is taking place during a transition period from La Niña to El Niño associated with a warming of the surface ocean.
