“Social distancing” with icebreakers and seals
Angesichts einer eingefrorenen starren Landschaft, die mehr oder weniger unverändert bis zum Horizont reicht, drängt sich der Vergleich mit einer Wüste auf. Sind wir hier allein? Natürlich nicht! Am Horiziont ziehen Eisbrecher ihre Bahnen und Kegelrobben mit ihrem Nachwuchs sind als kleine dunkle Punkte auf den Eisschollen erkennbar. Und wenn man ein gutes Teleobjektiv hat, kann man sie auch aus der Nähe betrachten.
Faced with a frozen rigid landscape that extends more or less unchanged to the horizon, the comparison with a desert comes to mind. Are we alone here? Of course not! On the horizon, icebreakers are making their rounds and grey seals with their offspring are visible as small dark dots on the ice floes. And if you have a good tele lens, you can also see them up close.
Wir werden sie nicht weiter stören, denn die Tiefenwasserbildung ist nicht ihr Ding. Obwohl sie natürlich davon profitieren: Ohne die regelmäßige winterliche Umwälzung könnte sich auch hier am Boden der Ostsee Sauerstoffnot einstellen. Und das hätte direkten Einfluss auf die Nahrungsgrundlage der Robben.
We won’t disturb them further, because deep water formation is not their business. Although, of course, they benefit from it: Without the regular winter circulation, oxygen depletion could set in here at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, too. And that would have a direct impact on the seals’ food base.
