Einmal Kanada und zurück – über die Expedition MSM101
Vom 12. Juni bis zum 20. Juli sind Forschende der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) unter Fahrtleitung von Professor Ralph Schneider, Institut für Geowissenschaften und Direktor des Forschungsschwerpunktes Kiel Marine Science (KMS) auf dem deutschen Forschungsschiff Maria S. Merian unterwegs nach Kanada vor die Küsten Neufundlands und Neuschottlands (Novia Scotia).
Ziel ist die Rekonstruktion der klimatischen Veränderungen der vergangenen 19.000 Jahre. Der Nordwestatlantik entlang des Scotian Schelfs und Kontinentalhangs ist eine ideale Region, um die heutige und vergangene Variabilität der wichtigsten oberflächennahen und tiefen Komponenten der atlantischen meridionalen Umwälzzirkulation (AMOC) zu untersuchen.
Die Ausfahrt ist Teil der bilateralen Zusammenarbeit in der Meeresforschung zwischen den Universitäten Dalhousie und Kiel gemeinsam mit dem GEOMAR. Sie soll wichtige Daten und Sedimentarchive zur Rekonstruktion der Variabilität in den konvergierenden warmen und kalten Wassermassen des Golfstroms und des Labradorstroms vor Nova Scotia liefern. Durch die Einschränkungen der Reisemöglichkeiten und die hohen Quarantäne-Auflagen findet die Fahrt allein mit Forschenden und Studierenden der Universität Kiel statt.

Über das Forschungsschiff Maria S. Merian
Das rund 95 Meter lange Forschungsschiff “Maria S. Merian” wurde am 9. Februar 2006 in Warnemünde in Dienst gestellt und ist für den Einsatz im Atlantik bis zum Eisrand, für Nord- und Ostsee, aber auch für Fahrten bis zum Äquator geeignet. Der Heimathafen der „Maria S. Merian“ ist Rostock, Eigner ist das Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Die “Maria S. Merian” bietet normalerweise Platz für 23 Forschende und 23 Besatzungsmitglieder.

To Canada and back – about the expedition MSM 101
From 12 June to 20 July, researchers from Kiel University will be on expedition NOVAMAR on bord the German research vessel Maria S. Merian heading for Canada, off the coasts of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Aim of the cruise is to reconstruct the climatic changes of the past 19,000 years. The Northwest Atlantic along the Scotian Shelf and Slope provides a unique environment to monitor modern and reconstruct past variability of critical components of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), including both surface and deep currents. Sediment samples will provide important data for the reconstruction of changes of surface and deep-water masses at the convergence of cold Labrador Sea and warm North Atlantic Currents.
The cruise is part of a bilateral collaboration in marine science between Dalhousie (Dalhousie University) and Kiel (Kiel University and the GEOMAR Helmholz Center for Ocean Research). Chief Scientist is Professor Ralph Schneider, Institut of Geosciences and Director of Kiel Marine Science (KMS). But, due to the restrictions on travel and the high quarantine requirements, the trip will take place with researchers and students from Kiel University alone.

About the research vessel “Maria S. Merian
The approximately 95-meter-long research vessel “Maria S. Merian” was commissioned in Warnemünde on February 9, 2006, and is suitable for operations in the Atlantic to the ice edge, for the North Sea and Baltic Sea, and also for voyages to the equator. Homeport of the “Maria S. Merian” is Rostock. Owner is the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The “Maria S. Merian” normally has room for 23 researchers and 23 crew members.
