Ahoi from Barbados

… the place, from where we start our five-week expedition with the German research vessel Meteor. The aim of our adventure is the exploration and investigation of active and inactive hot springs of the TAG hydrothermal field, which lies on the seafloor in the middle of the central Atlantic Ocean; more precisely on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

At the moment, the crew, technicians, equipment, food, and scientists are coming on board. Only the luggage of some scientists and crew members is still missing. Most likely, it did not make it through the airports and to the connecting flights in time. Everybody is hoping now that all get their personal belongings before the Meteor has to leave the harbor of Bridgetown.

Until then, everybody is unpacking containers and boxes, and setting up equipment, as it is more quiet and safe in the calm waters of the harbor to settle in labs, work spaces and cabins.

Ahoi von Barbados

… denn von hier aus startet unsere rund fünfwöchige Expedition mit dem deutschen Forschungsschiff Meteor. Ziel wird die Kartierung und Erkundung der aktiven und inaktiven heißen Quellen des TAG-Hydrothermalfelds sein, das sich auf dem Meeresgrund in der Mitte des Atlantiks, genauer auf dem Mittelatlantischen Rücken, befindet.

So langsam finden sich alle Besatzungsmitglieder, Techniker, Geräte, Proviant und Wissenschaftler am Schiff ein. Nur das Fluggepäck von einigen Wissenschaftlern und Besatzungsmitgliedern lässt noch auf sich warten. Es hat vermutlich den Umstieg am Flughafen nicht rechtzeitig geschafft und nun hoffen alle, dass es noch vor dem Auslaufen Barbados und die Meteor erreicht.

Bis dahin werden weiter die mitgebrachten Kisten und Container geleert und Geräte aufgebaut, denn im ruhigen Wasser des Hafens lassen sich Labore, Arbeitsplätze und Kabinen am sichersten einrichten.
