MSM142 is heading to the Labrador Sea at a unique time of year, when conditions are harsh but scientifically invaluable. On board the research vessel MARIA S. MERIAN, scientists will live and work together for six weeks. From daily routines at sea to cutting-edge observations, this expedition offers a glimpse into life and science in one of the North Atlantic’s most dynamic regions.
One focus of the journey is the Labrador Sea spring bloom. To better understand it, researchers will track small oceanic processes using a mix of ship-based measurements, underwater gliders, and autonomous floats drifting beneath the surface.
At the same time, a second line of research looks beyond these small processes to the wider ocean circulation. This is observed using instruments anchored to the seafloor, quietly recording how water masses move and evolve over time.
