On their way across the Pacific, an international team of researchers led by Professor Dr. Eric Achterberg, marine biogeochemist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, studies how limitations in nitrogen and the trace element iron reduce phytoplankton growth. Reduced phytoplankton growth is thought to cause a release of carbon dioxide in this ocean region instead of the widespread observed uptake. Ein internationales Team von Forschenden untersucht dort unter der Leitung von Professor Dr. Eric Achterberg, mariner Biogeochemiker am GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum f\u00fcr Ozeanforschung Kiel, wie ein begrenztes Angebot an Stickstoff und Eisen das Wachstum von Phytoplankton einschr\u00e4nkt. Es wird vermutet, dass ein vermindertes Phytoplankton-Wachstum in dieser Ozeanregion im Gegensatz zur ansonsten weit verbreiteten Aufnahme zu einer Freisetzung von Kohlendioxid f\u00fchrt.
