Today we finally launched the drifter. In the last days we searched for a suitable upwelling-patch off the coast of Mauritania. The drifter has been prepared until late in the night. In the morning, we came closer to the final point of deployment, an area with a fresh upwelling-patch, identifiable through low temperature, high concentration of CO2 and N2O, lower chlorophyll and lower salinity. This water is called South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) and is known for low salinity and low temperature. After a nerve-wracking search for the final position, the drifter was deployed in the early afternoon. The water patch with the drifter inside moves in the direction of the open sea.
The drifter consists of a GPS and radar reflector on top and a 5 meter buoyancy body below. The buoyancy body has a narrow form to provide as little surface for wind as possible, so the drifter is moved only by the water and not by the wind. Below the buoyancy body is an anchor sack, used for the same reason: to drift with the water mass. At the lower end a cage is mounted that houses various instruments for measurements of CO2, O2, nutrients, salinity, gas pressure and chlorophyll.

In the next days, we will follow the drifter with the help of the GPS sensor. During this time, we will make various measurements. Surface water is pumped on board and is measured for various gases as CO2, N2O and COS. We sample the vertical structure with a microstructure sonde and the CTD at regular intervals.

After we found the patch and deployed the drifter, the tension of the research crew went down. Now we all stand on the deck in the sunshine, following the drifter with our eyes, hoping we got a good patch. The last night was very stressful for most of us, so a bit of relaxing on this sunny Saturday is a welcome distraction.

Minutes after the deployment of the drifter.

$(document).ready(function() {
/*
 * Simple image gallery.
