It`s the first weekend of the year 2018 and the scientific crew of the research cruise POS519, from Las Palmas to Mindelo, is lifting the container with the equipment on board the POSEIDON, which is currently docked in Kiel. The drifter has been safely stored in the wet lab, the boxes with the material for the CTD measurements in the CTD lab and the computers have been equipped for the upcoming research. Today, on Monday the 8<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> of January 2018 the POSEIDON sets sails through the Kiel-Channel to the South. The POSEIDON will cross the Bay of Biscay in January with rough weather and seas, so the highest priority was the sea worthy lashing of all equipment.

We prepare ourselves in Kiel for the upcoming research cruise and make sure we are ready to go. In less than two weeks we will start from the cold, grey weather in Kiel to go on board the POSEIDON in Las Palmas. On January 21th 2018 we will cast-off and start our research program going toward the Mauritanian coast. <\/span><\/p>\n

In this blog you will find more information and you will get updated about processes, happenings and preliminary findings.<\/span><\/p>\n

For now we wish the crew of the POSEIDON a good and safe transfer. We meet again on January 19<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> 2018 in Las Palmas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Am ersten Januarwochenende im neuen Jahr 2018 haben wir den Container mit der n\u00f6tigen Ausr\u00fcstung f\u00fcr die anstehende Forschungsreise von Las Palmas nach Mindelo auf die zur Zeit in Kiel liegende POSEIDON verladen. Der Drifter wurde seefest im Nasslabor befestigt, die Kisten mit dem Zubeh\u00f6r f\u00fcr die CTD Messungen verstaut und die Computer f\u00fcr diese eingerichtet. Am heutigen Montag, den 8. Januar 2018 sticht die POSEIDON in See und macht sich durch den Nord-Ostsee-Kanal auf dem Weg gen S\u00fcden. Da die Passage durch die Biskaya geht, bei der vor allem im Januar mit starken Winden und Wellengang zu rechnen ist, ist die seefeste Befestigung der Forschungsmaterialen und -einrichtungen von h\u00f6chster Priorit\u00e4t gewesen.<\/p>\n

Wir bereiten uns nun vor Ort auf die anstehende Reise vor. Gehen die Prozesse und Vorhaben der Forschungsreise noch einmal durch, packen unsere Taschen, um dann in weniger als zwei Wochen dem kalten, grauen Wetter Kiels zu entfliehen und uns in Las Palmas an Bord der POSEIDON zu begeben, um dort am 21. Januar 2018 mit der Fahrt vor die K\u00fcste Mauretaniens zu beginnen. In den darauf folgenden zwei Wochen wird die POSEIDON vor der K\u00fcste driften und wir k\u00f6nnen unserer Studien zum Gasaustausch durchf\u00fchren. Weitere Informationen und aktuelle Updates \u00fcber Abl\u00e4ufe, Geschehnisse und Erkenntnisse werdet ihr hier finden.<\/p>\n

Nun aber w\u00fcnschen wir der Crew der POSEIDON eine gute und sichere Fahrt. Wir sehen uns am 19. Januar 2018 auf Las Palmas.<\/p>\n
