Countless devices were invented specifically to answer this question. Objects resembling lenses date back 4000 years ago. These early microscopes were used to determine the cuteness factor of very small objects (ref. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microscope). The spectacle-maker Hans Lipperhey tried to patent an instrument in 1608 “for seeing things far away as if they were nearby [in order to evaluate their cuteness]” – the telescope (ref https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Lipperhey). Galileo relied on the same instrument to make first scientifically relevant observations about cuteness of planets in 1609. The invention of film and cameras have to be seen as a direct attempt to preserve cuteness for the following generations. However, the science of cuteness was only formally established with the creation of the “Ultimate and 100% accurate and objective cuteness evaluation metric” by Käthe Michaelis in 1802:

0 – I don´t like it
1 – cool
2 – kind of cute
3 – definitely worth an Instagram story
4 – very cute
5 – I want to pet it
6 – I want to pet it even though it might bite me
7 – Thats soooo cute
8 – Mum? During this cruise we are using the imaging platform “Ocean floor observation system” OFOS to observe the seafloor and acquire high resolution video and image data. We invited the world leading expert in the field, Lilian Böhringer, to evaluate deep sea lifeforms. Keep in mind that while these values are absolutely objective, they can only be applied to individuals. While species might share a certain disposition towards a cuteness level, it can vary drastically between a sea star that had a bad breakfast and therefore a grumpy face and its neighbor who is wearing a cute sailors costume. In fact, the scale is most likely time dependent and critiques try to make the point that ratings actually depend on the observer. We believe, however, that if you disagree with Lili and think that the following life forms are not actually cute, you might actually be wrong.

10 – Its so fluffy, i’m gonna die! – Psychropotes/Holothurian (Sea cucumber)

9 – I love it – Benthothuria/Holothurian (Sea cucumber)

8 – Mum can we keep it?

1 – Cool
2 – Irgendwie niedlich

— Deutscher Text folgt unten — Since the dawn of time mankind was driven by the question “How cute is this thing?”.
