The third voyage of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) joint project MULTI-MAREX has officially begun. On 17 December 2025, the RV METEOR<\/em> set sail from Heraklion on Crete, Greece, and will spend the next four weeks conducting scientific measurements off Santorini and near the nearby underwater volcano Kolumbo. In addition, innovative monitoring and early warning systems will be tested to better assess the risk of potential extreme events. In light of the swarm of earthquakes that occurred around Santorini just this spring, we hope for an insightful voyage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the scientists arrive in Heraklion on the evening of 15 December. The Mediterranean welcomes us with mild, sunny winter weather as we make our way to the harbour on 16 December. The RV METEOR<\/em> is waiting for us there, having spent the previous two months south of Crete. Many members of the crew were already on site, either having stayed on from the previous cruise and now continuing to work at sea after a few days ashore, or having arrived a few days earlier to begin preparations. A total of 58 people are on board, 33 crew members and 25 members of the scientific team, whose collaboration makes this voyage possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we arrive at the ship and the equipment has been unloaded and set up, we move into the cabins and begin setting up the laboratories. There is a lively, bustling atmosphere as all the scientific and ship’s crews meet. Computers and measuring instruments are unloaded and secured, and names and tasks are exchanged. There is a lot of laughter as everything runs smoothly. Although some team members have worked together at sea before, there are also a few new faces. Over the next four weeks, we will be working closely together on this ship, so most of the names and corridors will become familiar in just a few days. After a few hours of intensive sorting and tidying, everything has found its place, and things have calmed down again \u2013 just in time for our first lunch together on board. By 11:15 a.m., a lovely smell is already coming from the kitchen \u2013 mealtimes on the ship have their own rhythm. In the afternoon, we receive a safety briefing because safety is, of course, the top priority at sea. The briefing covers some of the special features of life on board. Even though the ship is still in the harbour, we spend the night in our cabins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 17 December, we start our journey! We depart at 8 a.m. and set sail for Kolumbo with a north wind behind us. As we pass by, we can already see Santorini. For those who were already on the MSM132 (MMC-1) expedition in winter 2024, or who had the opportunity to meet with the local population and stakeholders as part of this year’s MULTI-MAREX fact-finding mission, it is a joyful reunion. For everyone else, it is an impressive sight! We will return here for many of our measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there is still a lot to prepare on the transit to the working area: as soon as we can start the measurements, all equipment must be ready for use, because there is no time to waste. That is why today is spent tinkering and testing, planning routes and discussing the schedule for the coming days in detail. In the afternoon, the first equipment tests are carried out in the water, and the first measurements begin tonight. On research vessels, measurements are also taken throughout the night: profiles are mapped with a multibeam measuring device to produce high-resolution images of the structure of the seabed near Kolumbo Seamount, an undersea volcano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our trip has one special feature that sets it apart from most others: as last year, we will be spending Christmas on board, and this year we will even be at sea well into the New Year. Despite the busy atmosphere that prevails during every trip, subtle signs of the pre-Christmas spirit are already apparent: delicious biscuits are already on the table during coffee breaks. The holidays on board will certainly be just as insightful as all the other days \u2013 but more on that in the next blog post!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
