You have to travel

to the experimental site long before the experiment starts and prepare the host institute for the mesocosm “circus” that is coming to town soon. You have to be in contact with all participants, arrange their travel, orders, customs, sampling, analytics, and their return home. This gives me the possibility to get to know all participants way before they arrive.

And the close interaction continues on site! In principle, I wouldn’t have to leave my desk in order to meet all people regularly. We arrange the sampling schedule, bills need to be paid, we need to discuss next steps, they want to have a look on the CTD data, or kindly and politely ask for some cookies because they were working all day and didn’t have the time to eat. There is no better way to attract hungry scientists than leaving some cookies unattended in the room.

Lennart, “should i take one…..or….maybe two?”

Sometimes, I ask myself whether there is a statistically significant correlation between scientific curiosity and appetite for sweets. Is there a lab study on this available? (Wikipedia definition of lab study: Investigation under controlled conditions in a specially designed environment)

Now it is time to pack. Containers are ordered, ship that brings back the mesocosm bags is booked, and carnets are ready to be controlled. Sadly I start cleaning up my desk. But I will leave the cookies here.

Good that the next two studies are already in the preparation phase and I can start dealing with new colleagues, other locations, and different visitors.

Jana and Micha

Andrea

_________
