It all started in the hallway of the ICBM in Oldenburg. I studied environmental sciences in my bachelors and spent large amounts of my time in the building of the ICBM (Institute for Marine Chemistry and Biology). And there, in the hallway, I saw it. A small replica of the RV SONNE. Since then, sailing on the SONNE became to one of my goals in life. And here I am!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, sailing from Chile to New Caledonia, thereby working in one of the least studied ocean regions on earth. But how did I make it here? After my bachelors I went to Kiel to study the masters programme \u201cBiological Oceanography\u201d at GEOMAR & University of Kiel. And this decision turned out to be a very lucky one. I was able to join the cruise to collect data for my master thesis. But reality put a spoke in my wheel \u2013 I got seasick. Of course, I hadn\u2019t thought about that before\u2026. But at least the medication is doing its job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As research is a very large part of the time whilst on a research vessel, an interesting topic for which you can bring up lots of motivation is crucial. Therefore, I decided to work on a biology related research question, even though this cruise mainly focuses on chemical oceanography. The productivity of the oceans is highly dependent on the nutrient availability for microalgae (phytoplankton) doing photosynthesis as they form the lowest trophic level in the food web. Increasing our knowledge on nutrient limitation for primary production improves our understanding of marine systems, which could in turn advance e.g., projections of climate change scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially during the last 30 years it became clear that iron is limiting primary production in large areas of the world oceans as it is an essential element in the process of photosynthesis. But there are still many uncertainties, especially for rarely studied regions like the South Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, it is not far fetched that I deal with nutrient availability for phytoplankton in my master thesis. In detail, I aim to map the different nutrient regimes on our transect through the South Pacific Ocean. Therefore, I study phytoplankton photo-physiology and conduct incubation experiments to assess phytoplankton nutrient limitations. Even though we don\u2019t know much about the South Pacific Ocean yet, one thing became clear already: the water. Low turbidity is an indication for a low productive system. But what is the major limitation for primary production? We are about to find out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unterwegs auf dem Forschungsschiff SONNE – ein Traum wird wahr<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angefangen hat alles in den Fluren des ICBM in Oldenburg. Ich habe im Bachelor Umweltwissenschaften studiert und viel Zeit im Geb\u00e4ude des ICBM (Institut f\u00fcr Meereschemie und -biologie) verbracht. Und da, auf dem Flur, sah ich es. Ein kleines Modell des Forschungsschiffs SONNE. Seitdem war eine Fahrt auf der SONNE eines meiner Lebensziele. Und hier bin ich nun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitten im S\u00fcdpazifik, auf dem Weg von Chile nach Neukaledonien, und damit in einer der am wenigsten erforschten Meeresregionen der Erde. Aber wie habe ich es hierher geschafft? Nach meinem Bachelor bin ich nach Kiel gezogen, um den Masterstudiengang “Biologische Ozeanographie” am GEOMAR und der Universit\u00e4t Kiel zu studieren. Und diese Entscheidung erwies sich als gro\u00dfes Gl\u00fcck. Ich konnte an der Fahrt teilnehmen, um Daten f\u00fcr meine Masterarbeit zu sammeln. Doch die Realit\u00e4t machte mir einen Strich durch die Rechnung – ich wurde seekrank. Daran hatte ich nat\u00fcrlich vorher nicht gedacht\u2026 Aber wenigstens helfen die Medikamente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Da die Forschung einen sehr gro\u00dfen Teil der Zeit auf einem Forschungsschiff einnimmt, ist ein interessantes Thema, f\u00fcr das man viel Motivation aufbringen kann, sehr wichtig. Deshalb habe ich mich f\u00fcr eine biologische Fragestellung entschieden, auch wenn der Schwerpunkt dieser Fahrt auf der chemischen Ozeanographie liegt. Die Produktivit\u00e4t der Ozeane h\u00e4ngt in hohem Ma\u00dfe von der Verf\u00fcgbarkeit von N\u00e4hrstoffen f\u00fcr die Photosynthese betreibenden Mikroalgen (Phytoplankton) ab, da diese die unterste trophische Ebene im Nahrungsnetz bilden. Ein besseres Verst\u00e4ndnis der N\u00e4hrstofflimitierung f\u00fcr die Prim\u00e4rproduktion verbessert unser Verst\u00e4ndnis der marinen Systeme, was wiederum zum Beispiel Projektionen von Klimawandelszenarien voranbringen k\u00f6nnte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vor allem in den vergangenen 30 Jahren wurde deutlich, dass Eisen die Prim\u00e4rproduktion in weiten Teilen der Weltmeere einschr\u00e4nkt, da es ein wesentliches Element im Prozess der Photosynthese ist. Aber es gibt immer noch viele Unsicherheiten, insbesondere f\u00fcr selten untersuchte Regionen wie den S\u00fcdpazifik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es ist also nicht weit hergeholt, dass ich mich in meiner Masterarbeit mit der N\u00e4hrstoffverf\u00fcgbarkeit f\u00fcr das Phytoplankton besch\u00e4ftige. Im Detail geht es mir darum, die verschiedenen N\u00e4hrstoffregime auf unserem Transekt durch den S\u00fcdpazifik zu kartieren. Dazu untersuche ich die Photophysiologie des Phytoplanktons und f\u00fchre Inkubationsexperimente durch, um die N\u00e4hrstoffbeschr\u00e4nkungen f\u00fcr das Phytoplankton zu ermitteln. Auch wenn wir noch nicht viel \u00fcber den S\u00fcdpazifik wissen, wurde eines bereits klar: das Wasser. Eine geringe Tr\u00fcbung ist ein Hinweis auf ein wenig produktives System. Aber was ist die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Einschr\u00e4nkung f\u00fcr die Prim\u00e4rproduktion? Das werden wir herausfinden!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
