Since then 2 to 3 school classes have bustled around the modules of Kiel’s marine sciences. In particular, the exhibit “waste in the ocean” has attracted a lot of positive attention among young visitors. Again and again, they look at the screen with surprise after they held an item against the scanner which shows them how long it takes until the item will be decomposed in a natural way. The modules about sustainable fisheries, the fish length’s game and the EcoOcean, the fisheries management game, as well as the Jago model, the corals and the films about day-to-day research work have been a real success. According to the guides there was nothing which would not have caused excitement and joy. And if the little guests are satisfied, the older ones will join, as well. The museum has counted more than 100 guests per day only for the exhibition “Future Ocean Dialogue”, even Brazilian TV channels reported on the exhibition. Last Saturday, when the University of Sao Paulo opened its doors for the public, on one day alone 2000 visitors saw the exhibition. Our local partners have created an accompanying program in addition to the day-to-day exhibition. Under the title “From Science to Society- Impulse Lectures on the Impacts of Climate Change and Human Exploitation of the Ocean” marine scientists present their research topics, among them is also the former PhD student from Kiel, Marius Müller.

In Kiel we are already looking forward to the next, for now last exhibition location, Itajai. On the October 20 things will be packed in Sao Paulo so that the “Future Ocean Dialogue” can be opened in time in Itajai on October 24. The exhibition will be located again on the university campus which is placed in the city center. On October 25, on day later, one of the biggest specialist conference in the field of marine sciences will start in Itajai, the Brazilian Oceanography Congress. Every two years, scientists and representatives of industry and politics come together in this location. It is a nice way for us to complete the journey before the exhibition will travel back to Kiel.

Future Ocean Dialogue in Sao Paulo (Photo: Christian de Lamboy)

Unter dem Titel “From Science to Society- Impulse Lectures on the Impacts of Climate Change and Human Exploitation of the Ocean” stellen Meeresforscher, darunter auch der ehemalige Doktorand aus Kiel, Marius Müller, ihre Forschungsthemen vor.
