In the last blogposts our team shared the goals of this expedition and some of our recent discoveries from the seafloor. But what does daily work and life on a research vessel like METEOR look like? Life on board is structured by deck operations and mealtimes \u2013 breakfast (7.15 am), coffee (10.00 am), lunch (11.15 am), coffee (3.00 pm), dinner (5.15 pm). Our after-hour activities include science talks, get togethers in the bar, card games, watching football matches, movies, gym and sauna visits \u2013 and for many of us also emails to maintain our terrestrial duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the CYRTACI expedition, most hands-on activities that allow us to retrieve samples from the seafloor take place in the Geolab and on the main deck during the daytime hours. Once it\u2019s dark and through the night we collect geophysical data with the ship\u2019s multibeam and sub bottom profiler systems to image the seafloor bathymetry and the top several tens of meters of seafloor sediment. Although science essentially never sleeps on METEOR, scientists need to do so. And therefore, we have organized ourselves in shifts. Our science team works in shifts in the science labs on the main deck, and in the operations room. In doing so we are supported by an awesome crew who are cooperative, capable, and good-humoured bunch so that we can focus on our science tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a lot more going on behind the scenes than one can capture in this blog, which is why we have been posting daily updates via #CYRTACI23 on Instagram. And there are many people who work in the background to support the science on board. While our team of scientists spends three weeks on board, ship\u2019s crew call METEOR home for many months of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ship\u2019s crew on the bridge consists of the Captain and nautical officers \u2013 they navigate the vessel, maintain onboard safety equipment, conduct safety drills, collaborate with the science team to plan routes for the expedition, and keep us out of marine exclusion zones. The chief mate oversees the deck hands and catering department. He is also in charge of the ship\u2019s cargo, to ensure the vessel is stable through the shuffling of ballast tanks. The bridge officers work closely together with the engine department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engine department consists of engineers, three motormen, a fitter and an electrician who maintain the engines, the ship\u2019s air-conditioning, sewage, and freshwater systems. They also have a workshop where they can weld and fabricate spare parts. Before this expedition they worked especially hard to get the gearbox of the lifeboat \u201cMETEORIT\u201d exchanged so we could leave port with minimal delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A team of deck hands working with the boson makes sure to maintain the deck. This involves keeping the deck clean, regular rust chipping, grinding, painting, woodwork, operating the winches, cranes, and workboats. This team keeps busy at all times of the day and through the night when they do their hourly \u2018Sicherheitsronden\u2019 (safety rounds). They work together with the scientific team and are responsible for putting the equipment into the water to take sediment cores. They are supported by the technician from Geomar Kiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chefs, stewards and laundry master cook, clean, organize, launder, and keeps us and the ship organized, clean and well-fed. Chefs pre-plan meals to reduce waste and are creative with leftovers. There is a seemingly endless stream of delicious cooked and baked goods ranging from regional and world cuisine that are served in the ship\u2019s galley. But before one can take a seat at the set table there is a set of rules, which each science team needs to learn \u2013 usually by making a mistake (at least) once. Some of the rules are: no dirty work clothing (includes muddy boots), no phones in the messroom, and get up when you have eaten up to make space for others waiting to take a seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team of scientific marine technicians is part of the ship\u2019s crew. It looks after the scientific instruments on board and is the link between the ship\u2019s crew and the scientists, as its work often involves troubleshooting and fixing scientific equipment. These include sonars, sea surface instruments, the CTD profiler, data logging computers, and our connection to the outside world via satellite internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team at the meteorological service collects and evaluate meteorological data, maintains meteorological equipment, and works closely together with the navigation officer to ensure smooth sailing. Some of us are certain they have a direct connection the Greek weather deities, as we have been very lucky with the conditions thus far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ship\u2019s doctor maintains medical equipment including the ship\u2019s own small hospital, administers medication (including for occasional seasickness), conducts first aid training sometimes in conjunction with a drill. The nautical officers have medical training so that they can assist the doctor if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the crew, there are those that always envisioned themselves being at sea and those that came here from different walks of life. The crew is primarily of German nationality, the members of the crew come from different walks of life with a range of backgrounds. Of the 34 crewmembers, three are female. Throughout the year, this crew works upto eight months on the ship. Once on land, parts of the crew are replaced. But a seafarer cannot easily deny their destiny \u2013they are easily identified by the way they walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about their favourite part about the job, it\u2019s clear many enjoy being at sea and love the ocean, seeing the world while working, collaborating with the science crew, and the lifestyle \u2013 it is clear it is something special that is hard to explain in words. However, the most common thread was the sense of belonging and mateship this crew has with one another and the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CYRTACI science team is extremely grateful to work aboard this superb vessel, especially with such a proud, enthusiastic, and welcoming crew of shipmates with a positive, \u2018can-do\u2019 attitude that supports us and the science we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HINTER DEN KULISSEN: DAS LEBEN AN BORD F\/S METEOR W\u00c4HREND M195 CYRTACI<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In den bisherigen Blogposts hat unser CYRTACI-Team \u00fcber die Ziele dieser Expedition und einige unserer j\u00fcngsten Entdeckungen auf dem Meeresboden berichtet. Aber wie sieht der Arbeits- und Lebensalltag auf einem Forschungsschiff wie der METEOR aus? Das Leben an Bord ist durch den Deckbetrieb und die Essenszeiten strukturiert \u2013 Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck um 7.15 Uhr, Kaffee um 10.00 Uhr, Mittagessen um 11.15 Uhr, Kaffee um 15.00 Uhr und Abendessen um 17.15 Uhr. Zu unseren Aktivit\u00e4ten nach Feierabend geh\u00f6ren wissenschaftliche Vortr\u00e4ge, geselliges Beisammensein, Kartenspiele, Fu\u00dfballspiele, Filme, Fitnessstudio- und Saunabesuche \u2013 und f\u00fcr viele von uns auch E-Mails, die uns an unsere Pflichten an Land erinnern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auf der CYRTACI-Expedition finden die meisten Aktivit\u00e4ten rund um die Probennahme am Meeresboden tags\u00fcber im Geolabor und auf dem Hauptdeck statt. Nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit und w\u00e4hrend der Nacht sammeln wir geophysikalische Daten mit dem Multi-Beam- und Sub-Bottom-Profiler-System, um die Bathymetrie des Meeresbodens und die obersten paar Dutzend Meter des Sediments und den Meeresboden abzubilden. W\u00e4hrend die Wissenschaft auf der METEOR also nie schl\u00e4ft, m\u00fcssen Wissenschaftler es dennoch tun. Deshalb haben wir uns in Schichten organisiert. Unser Wissenschaftsteam arbeitet in Schichten in den Laboren, auf dem Hauptdeck. Unterst\u00fctzt werden wir von einem kooperativen, kompetenten und jederzeit gut gelaunten Team der Schiffsbesatzung, so dass wir uns ganz auf unsere wissenschaftlichen Aufgaben konzentrieren k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hinter den Kulissen passiert viel mehr, als man in diesem Blog erfassen kann. Deshalb haben wir auf Instagram unter #CYRTACI23 t\u00e4gliche Updates gepostet. Und es gibt viele Leute, die im Hintergrund arbeiten, um die Wissenschaft an Bord \u00fcberhaupt m\u00f6glich zu machen. W\u00e4hrend unser Team von Wissenschaftlern drei Wochen an Bord verbringt, ist die Schiffsbesatzung viele Monate im Jahr auf der METEOR zu Hause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Schiffsbesatzung auf der Br\u00fccke besteht aus dem Kapit\u00e4n und den nautischen Offizieren – sie navigieren das Schiff, warten die Sicherheitsausr\u00fcstung an Bord, f\u00fchren Sicherheits\u00fcbungen durch, arbeiten mit dem Wissenschaftsteam zusammen, um die Routen f\u00fcr die Expedition zu planen, und halten uns aus den maritimen Sperrgebieten heraus. Der Erste Offizier hat die Aufsicht \u00fcber die Decksarbeiter und die Wirtschaft. Er ist auch f\u00fcr die Ladung des Schiffes verantwortlich und sorgt daf\u00fcr, dass das Schiff durch Umpumpen von Ballastwasser stabil bleibt. Die Br\u00fcckenoffiziere arbeiten eng mit der Maschinenabteilung zusammen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Maschinenabteilung besteht aus Ingenieuren, drei Motorenw\u00e4rtern, einem Deckschlosser und einem Elektriker, die die Motoren, die Klimaanlagen, das Abwassersystem und die Frischwassersysteme des Schiffes instand halten. Sie verf\u00fcgen auch \u00fcber eine Werkstatt, in der sie schwei\u00dfen und Ersatzteile herstellen k\u00f6nnen. Vor unserer Expedition arbeiteten sie besonders hart daran, das Getriebe des Rettungsbootes “METEORIT” auszutauschen, damit wir den Hafen mit minimaler Verz\u00f6gerung verlassen konnten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein Team von Matrosen, die mit dem Bootsmann arbeiten, sorgt f\u00fcr die Instandhaltung des Schiffes. Dazu geh\u00f6ren das Sauberhalten des Decks, das Rostfahren und regelm\u00e4\u00dfige Maler- und Holzarbeiten, die Bedienung der Winden, Kr\u00e4ne und des Arbeitsbootes. Dieses Team arbeitet rund um die Uhr, und f\u00fchrt st\u00fcndliche ‘Ronden’ (Sicherheitsrunden) durch. Sie arbeiten mit den Wissenschaftlern zusammen, und sind daf\u00fcr verantwortlich die Ger\u00e4te ins Wasser zu setzen, um Sedimentkerne zu ziehen. Dabei unterst\u00fctzt sie der Techniker vom Geomar Kiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die K\u00f6che, die Stewards und der W\u00e4scher – kochen, putzen, organisieren, waschen und k\u00fcmmern sich darum, dass das Schiff ordentlich, auf Kurs, sauber und die Besatzung gut gen\u00e4hrt ist. Aus der Komb\u00fcse flie\u00dft ein scheinbar endloser Strom von gekochten und gebackenen K\u00f6stlichkeiten aus der regionalen und internationalen K\u00fcche. Doch bevor man am gedeckten Tisch Platz nehmen kann, gibt es eine Reihe von Regeln, die jedes Wissenschaftsteam lernen muss \u2013in der Regel, indem es (mindestens) einmal einen Fehler macht. Einige der Regeln lauten: keine schmutzige Arbeitskleidung (auch keine verschlammten Arbeitsschuhe), keine Handys in der Messe und aufstehen, wenn man fertig gegessen hat damit andere Platz nehmen k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das Team des Wissenschaftlich-Technischen Dienstes (WTD) ist Teil der Schiffsbesatzung und k\u00fcmmert sich um die wissenschaftlichen Instrumente an Bord. Es fungiert als das Bindeglied zwischen der Schiffsbesatzung und den Wissenschaftlern, da ihre Arbeit oft die Fehlersuche und Reparatur wissenschaftlicher Ger\u00e4te beinhaltet. Dazu geh\u00f6ren Sonare, Meeresoberfl\u00e4cheninstrumente, Datenerfassungscomputer und unsere Verbindung zur Au\u00dfenwelt \u00fcber Satelliteninternet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das Team des Deutschen Wetterdienstes (DWD) sammelt meteorologische Daten, wertet sie aus, wartet die meteorologische Ausr\u00fcstung und arbeitet eng mit dem Navigationsoffizier zusammen, um eine reibungslose Fahrt zu gew\u00e4hrleisten. Einige von uns sind sich sicher, dass die Wetterfr\u00f6sche an Bord eine direkte Verbindung zu den griechischen Wetterg\u00f6ttern haben, da wir bisher sehr viel Gl\u00fcck mit den \u00e4u\u00dferen Bedingungen hatten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der Schiffsarzt unterh\u00e4lt die medizinische Ausr\u00fcstung einschlie\u00dflich des schiffseigenen kleinen Krankenhauses, verabreicht Medikamente (auch bei gelegentlicher Seekrankheit), f\u00fchrt Erste-Hilfe-Schulungen durch, die manchmal mit einer \u00dcbung verbunden werden. Die nautischen Offiziere haben eine medizinische Ausbildung, so dass sie den Arzt bei Bedarf unterst\u00fctzen k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innerhalb der Besatzung gibt es diejenigen, die schon immer zur See fahren wollten, und diejenigen, deren Lebensweg sie zur Seefahrt gef\u00fchrt hat. Die meisten Mitglieder der Besatzung sind deutscher Nationalit\u00e4t, und habenverschiedene Werdeg\u00e4nge. Von den 34 Besatzungsmitgliedern sind drei weiblich. Im Laufe eines Jahres arbeitet die METEOR-Besatzung bis zu acht Monate auf dem Schiff. Sobald sie an Land ist, werden Teile der Mannschaft abgel\u00f6st andere Mannschaft ersetzt. Aber auch an Land k\u00f6nnen ein Seefahrer ihre Herkunft nicht verleugnen, denn man kann sie stets am Gang erkennen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auf die Frage, was ihnen an ihrer Arbeit am besten gef\u00e4llt, antworten viele an Bord, dass sie aus Liebe zum Meer auf See sind, dass sie bei ihrer Arbeit die Welt sehen, dass sie mit der wissenschaftlichen Crew zusammenarbeiten und dass sie den Lebensstil genie\u00dfen. Es ist klar, dass es etwas Besonderes ist, das sich nur schwer in Worte fassen l\u00e4sst. Die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Gemeinsamkeit war jedoch die Beziehung, die die Crew untereinander hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das CYRTACI-Wissenschaftsteam ist sehr dankbar, an Bord dieses gro\u00dfartigen Schiffes arbeiten zu d\u00fcrfen, vor allem mit einer so enthusiastischen und einladenden Crew von Schiffskameraden mit einer positiven “Kann-ich-machen”-Einstellung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
