This was the case today as we launched two Wavegliders from the R/V MARIA S. MERIAN during the MSM61 cruise in the Macaronesia region as part of a collaboration between MARUM, PLOCAN, and GEOMAR under the framework of the AtlantOS Project.

During the first weeks research will be carried out in the Senghor Seamount area running transects to support the ship based survey after the ship has left the region. After a month of survey, the MARUM SV3 Waveglider will drive North about 1,200 nm to PLOCAN to be recovered there by PLOCAN staff. On the way, it will pass Cape Blanc where MARUM sediment trap moorings have been deployed to look for the presence of sand particles that fertilize plankton blooms in the region. The GEOMAR SV2 Waveglider will also remain in the Senghor Seamount area for about one month and will then be recovered by INDP staff in Cape Verde.

$(document).ready(function() {
/*
 * Simple image gallery. On this mission the science sensors are primarily for biogeochemical measurements and include CTD, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll fluorescence, and water column backscatter.

This is a particularly exciting launch for the MARUM SV3 as it is the vehicle’s first scientific mission and is being used to prove the vehicle’s operational capabilities for more sustainable autonomous ocean observations. The MARUM Waveglider, as part of the Helmholtz-Alliance ROBEX, will be primarily used as a platform for future payload development, including a mobile communications gateway to AUVs.

Just as coordination among multiple autonomous ocean vehicles is important for scientific research, this activity has relied on international cooperation from public and private partners involved in sensor integration, technical support, and piloting.
