Sie wissen bereits was wir an Bord des FS MARIA S. MERIAN machen und warum wir unterwegs sind. Aber wer sind wir?
Deshalb möchten wir uns im heutigen Beitrag kurz vorstellen.
You know already what we do on board of MARIA S. MERIAN and why we are here in the Central Eastern Atlantic. But who are we?
Therefore, we like to introduce ourselves in this blog.

Dr. Froukje M. van der Zwan ist Wissenschaftlerin (PostDoc) am Institut für Geowissenschaften an der Universität zu Kiel. Sie hat Geowissenschaften an der Universität Amsterdam studiert und sich auf Geochemie und Petrologie spezialisiert. Ihre Doktorarbeit schrieb sie am GEOMAR in Kiel im Forschungsbereich 4 „Magmatische und Hydrothermale Systeme (Vulkanologie)“ zum Thema „Hydrothermale Aktivität an langsam spreizenden Mittelozeanischen Rücken – Hinweise durch Chlor in Basalt“. Ihre wissenschaftlichen Interessen gelten basaltischen Systemen an Mittelozeanischen Rücken und dem Intraplattenvulkanismus, im besonderen der sogenannten Kamerun Vulkanlinie, an der sie die Petrologie und Geochemie von magmatischen Gesteinen, Mineralen sowie von Schmelz- und Fluideinschlüssen studiert. Sie ist die wissenschaftliche Fahrtleiterin dieser Expedition und arbeitet eng mit allen Gruppen und der Schiffsführung zusammen um diese Expedition erfolgreich durchzuführen.
Dr. Froukje van der Zwan is scientist (Posdoc) at the institute of Geosciences, University of Kiel. She studied Geosciences at the University of Amsterdam, where she specialized in geochemistry and petrology. Her PhD degree she received at GEOMAR Kiel, Research Division 4, unit “Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems (Volcanology)” with the thesis: “Hydrothermal Activity at Slow Spreading Mid-Ocean Ridges – Evidence from Chlorine in Basalt”. Her research interests are basaltic systems, both on mid-ocean ridges as at intraplate volcanic provinces, particularly at the Cameroon volcanic line. She studies this environments using petrology and geochemistry of basaltic rocks, minerals and melt- and fluid inclusions. During the MSM70 Expedition she is the chief scientist and works closely together with all working groups and the ships crew to bring the cruise to a success.

Dr. Nico Augustin ist Wissenschaftler am GEOMAR Helmholtz Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel Forschungsbereich 4, „Magmatische und Hydrothermale Systeme (Vulkanologie)“. Nach dem Studium der Geologie & Paläontologie an der Universität zu Kiel arbeitete er für seine Doktorarbeit an den Universitäten Bremen und Kiel zum Thema: „Hoch- und Niedrigtemperatur Alteration Ultramafischer Ozeanischer Kruste“. Seine wissenschaftlichen Interessen sind die marine Petrologie und Geochemie und seit einige Jahren verstärkt die Meeresbodenvermessung und -morphologie mit Schwerpunkt Vulkanologie und Tektonik an Spreizungsachsen (besonders Rotes Meer). Auf dieser Expedition Leitet er die Bathymetrie-Gruppe und hilft wo er kann.
Dr. Nico Augustin is a research scientist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel Research Division 4, unit “Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems (Volcanology)”. He did his studies of Geology & Palaeontology at the University of Kiel. Afterwards he continued with his PhD studies at the University of Bremen and the University of Kiel on the topic: “High and Low-Temperature Alteration of Ultramafic Oceanic Crust”. His fields of interests are geochemistry and petrology, bathymetry and geomorphology with a focus on volcanology and tectonics in spreading centers (especially in the Red Sea). He leads the bathymetric team during the MSM70 Expedition and helps out where else he can.

Dr. Morgane Le Saout ist Wissenschaftlerin (PostDoc) am GEOMAR Helmholtz Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel im Forschungsbereich 4, „Magmatische und Hydrothermale Systeme (Vulkanologie)“. Sie promovierte an der Universität Brest zum Thema „Interagierender Mittelozeanischer Rücken-Hotspot – Zusammenhang zwischen Tektonik und magmatischen Prozessen am Ostpazifischen Rücken, 16°N“. Wissenschaftlich interessiert sie besonders der Zusammenhang vom Ozeanbodenmorphologie und Vulkanismus. Während MSM70 ist Sie Teil der Bathymetrie-Gruppe.
Dr. Morgane Le Saout is a scientist (Postdoc) at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel Research Division 4, unit “Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems (Volcanology)”. She obtained her PhD from the University of Brest working on: Interaction mid-ocean ridge hotspot: relation between tectonic and magmatic processes at the east pacific rise, 16°N. The research she is interested in includes particularly the relation between morphology of the ocean floor and its volcanism. She is a member of the bathymetrists team during this cruise.

Dr. Anne-Cathrin Wölfl ist Wissenschaftlerin (PostDoc) am GEOMAR Helmholtz Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel Forschungsbereich 4, „Magmatische und Hydrothermale Systeme (Vulkanologie)“. Sie hat an der Universität Hamburg promoviert. Das Thema ihrer Doktorarbeit ist „Ozeanboden Charakteristika als Indikator für marine Umwelt in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft in Potter Cove, King Georg Island, Antarctica“. Sie beschäftigt sich wissenschaftlich mit der Kartierung des Ozeanboden, „Open Science“ und Geographischen Informationssystemen (GIS). Auf der Expedition MSM70 ist Sie Mitglied der Bathymetrie-Gruppe.
Dr. Anne-Cathrin Wölfl is a scientis (Postdoc) at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel Research Division 4, unit “Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems (Volcanology)”. She obtained her PhD degree from the University of Hamburg, Division Geology and Geophysics for the thesis: “Using seafloor characteristics as indicators for past, modern and future marine environments in Potter Cove, King George Island, Antarctica. Her field of work comprises Seafloor mapping, “Open Science” and GIS (GeoInformationsSystem). During the MSM70 Expedition she is part of the bathymetrists team.


M.Sc. Xiaojun Long ist Doktorand am GEOMAR Helmholtz Zentrum für Ozeanforschung, Kiel Forschungsbereich 4, „Magmatische und Hydrothermale Systeme (Petrologie). Er hat Geowissenschaften an der Ocean University of China in Qingdao studiert und eine Masterarbeit über das Alter und den Ursprung von Seamounts im Zentralatlantik und Schmelzanomalien am mittelatlantischen Rücken verfasst. Intraplattenvulkanismus und alleinstehende Seamounts sind seine Forschungsschwerpunkte. Während der Expedition MSM70 verstärkt er die Petrologie-Gruppe.
M.Sc. Xiaojun Long is a PhD student at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel Research Division 4, unit “Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems (Volcanology)”. He performed his studies of Geosciences at the Ocean University China, Qingdao in China. His Master thesis he wrote on: “Age and Origin of Central Atlantic Seamounts and Melt Anomalies at the Mid-Atlantic ridge. His areas of interest are intraplate volcanism and solitary seamounts using petrology and geochemistry. Therefore he is part of the petrology team during the MSM70 Expedition.


M.Sc. Richard J. Antonio ist Doktorand an der Universität Bremen im  Forschungsbereich „Petrologie der Ozeankruste“.  Sein Arbeitsgebiet ist die Dynamik von Plumes in ultra-langsamen Spreizungszonen. Während der Expedition MSM70  ist er Mitglied der Petrologie-Gruppe.
M.Sc. Richard J. Antonio is a PhD student at the University of Bremen, Research Division “Petrology of the Oceanic Crust”. His research topic is the dynamic of plumes at ultra-slow spreading mid-ocean ridges. He enforces the petrology team during MSM70.


B.Sc. Jakub Miluch ist Masterstudent der Geologie und „Marine and Coastal Geosciences“ an der Universität Stettin sowie den Universitäten Greifswald und Warnemünde. Seine Bachelorarbeit schrieb er über Sedimentkerne aus dem Südchinesischen Meer im Hinblick auf Korngrößenverteilungen und Geochemie. Sein Masterprojekt ist die 3D-Modellierung von Paläodaten im Südchinesischen Meer basierend auf seismischen Profilen. Auf der Expedition MSM70 unterstützt er die Bathymetrie-Gruppe.
B.Sc. Jakub Miluch is a Master student of geoscience and marine and coastal geoscience at the University of Stettin and the Universities of Greifswald and Warnemünde. His Bachelor thesis he wrote on “Sediment Cores of the South China Sea in View of Geochemistry and Distribution of Grain Size”. This work he continues during his master projects where he works on 3D-Modelling of seismic profiles of south Chinese sea. During the MSM70 expedition he works in the bathymetrists team.

B.Sc. Jörg Follmann ist Masterstudent der Geowissenschaften an der Universität zu Kiel. Er ist studentische Hilfskraft in der Arbeitsgruppe „Geotechnik“ am Institut für Geowissenschaften. Das Thema seiner Bachelorarbeit war „Metamorphe Petrologie und Physik der Gesteine der östlichen Pyrenäen“. Interessenschwerpunkte sind Petrologie und Modellierung. Während der Expedition MSM70 ist er Teil der Petrologie Gruppe.
Jörg Follmann is a Master student of Geosciences at the University of Kiel. He also works there as a student helper in the work group Wuttke, Geotechnics at the University of Kiel. His Bachelor project he worked on “Metamorphic petrology and Physics of Eastern Pyrenean Rocks”His main areas of interest are petrology and modelling, which makes him part of the petrology team on board during MSM70.

B.Sc. Verena Heinath ist Masterstudentin der Geowissenschaften an der Universität zu Kiel. Sie ist studentische Hilfskraft in der Arbeitsgruppe „Paläo-Ozeanografie und Klima“ am Institut für Geowissenschaften und schrieb eine Bachelorarbeit mit dem Titel „Geochemie der Gabbros aus den Ophiolithen im Oman“. Wissenschaftlich interessiert sie sich für Petrologie und Geochemie. Während der Expedition MSM70  ist sie Teil der Petrologie-Gruppe.
B.Sc. Verena Heinath is a Master student of geosciences at the University of Kiel. She works as a student helper  in the Research Division “Palaeo-Oceanography and Climate” and did her Bachelor thesis on: “Geochemistry of Gabbros in Ophiolits of Oman”. Her main area of interest are petrology and geochemistry. She is also a member of the petrologists team during MSM70.

Janto Schönberg ist Bachelorstudent der Geographie an der Universität zu Kiel mit dem  Interessenschwerpunkt GIS (GeoInformationsSystem). Er macht derzeit ein Auslandssemester in Kobe, Japan. Auf der Expedition MSM70 ist  er Teil der Bathymetrie Gruppe.
Janto Schönberg is a Bachelor student of Geography at the University of Kiel. His main area of interest is GIS (Geographic Information System) and he currently makes a semester as exchange student at the University of Kobe, Japan. During the MSM70 cruise he works in the bathymetrists team.

Martin Schade ist Bachelorstudent der Geowissenschaften an der Universität zu Kiel und Studentische Hilfskraft am GEOMAR in der Arbeitsgruppe „Magmatische und Hydrothermale Systeme (Vulkanologie)“. Sein Interesse gilt der marinen Geologie und Vulkanologie. Auf der Expedition MSM70 verstärkt er die Bathymetrie-Gruppe.

His research interest are marine geology and volcanology and he also is part of the bathymetrists team during the MSM70 cruise.


Mehmet Can Köse ist Bachelorstudent der Geowissenschaften an der Universität zu Kiel mit dem Interessenschwerpunkt marine Umwelt und Petrologie. Während MSM70 ist er Mitglied der Petrologie-Gruppe.
Mehmet Can Köse is a Bachelor student of Geosciences at the University of Kiel, Germany. He is mainly interested in marine geosciences and petrology and is member of the petrologists team during the MSM70 expedition.


Louisa Krach
ist Bachelorstudentin der Geowissenschaften an der Universität zu Kiel  mit Vertiefung marine Umwelt und Petrologie. Auch sie ist, während MSM70, Teil der Gruppe Petrologie.
